Message to the 16 million students and 1 million educators in US high schools
We are on your side.
At The Civics Center, we believe in the values of respect and dignity that are at the heart of becoming a vibrant and sustaining multi-racial democracy in which we all can thrive.
At times of great national significance since starting The Civics Center, I’ve sent messages to students and educators. Too often, they are faced with interpreting and managing the impacts of important moments without guidance that speaks to their particular concerns.
Here are the messages I am sending today. It is my hope that you will share these with students and educators in your life as a way of letting them know of the connection you feel to them and that we are with them, too.
Statement on 2024 election to the 16 million future voters now in US high schools
“Voting is one kind of power. Another is the power to dream of the future you want and to point your hopes and actions in that direction. My wish is that you will draw from sources of strength, compassion and connection, that you will insist on protecting your own dignity and the inherent worth of everyone in your community, that you will seek out the good in others and identify opportunities for kindness and friendship. You are not alone.”
Statement on 2024 election to the 1 million teachers in US high schools
“We honor the calling of your profession. Every day, you meet students where they are and open new possibilities for them. The task of helping students to navigate through divisions in our country and their impacts, and to do so with patience, kindness, and respect is greater than any one person. Our wish for you is that you find communities grounded in the values of care, equity, and hope that will fortify you and your students with strength.”
–Laura W. Brill, Founder, CEO of The Civics Center
Thank you for these thoughtful messages. Laura, I know you launched this great organization in response to the 2016 election and I so believe that the work you, we are doing through TCC is more important than ever. We are in this for the long haul, and we need to raise a new generation of informed, active voters. Right now we need time to grieve, restore and regroup, but we cannot retreat. Thank you for all you do.
Thank you Laura. I am spreading the word of your very hard work to my other Substack subscriptions. I refuse to do social media. My social media is Substack. I set up recurring monthly donations to your organization. When I recover from our devastating loss I will send an email on what we can do in communicating to high schools and community colleges around the country about the importance of Civics classes and the extreme urgency of registering young voters.
