9,000 18-year-olds have an opportunity to register and vote in the election to fill George Santos’s vacant seat.
Under New York law, within 10 days of a vacancy occurring, the Governor is required to issue a proclamation declaring a special election. The special election is required to take place between 70 and 80 days after the proclamation. You can read more about the process here.
Most 18-year-olds in the district are not yet registered to vote. The third Congressional District includes parts of Queens and Nassau County. In these counties, only 6.4% and 18.5% of 16- and 17-year-olds, respectively, were preregistered to vote as of February 2023. The registration rates for 18-year-olds today are unlikely to be dramatically higher than these preregistration rates.
The deadline to register will be 10 days before the special election.
New York State has easy online registration tools. Click the button below that pertains to you:
George Santos won his seat by 20,420 votes. Your vote can make a difference.
What can you do?
For a map to find the cities and town in the district, click here. Then ask everyone you know in the district to make sure they are registered to vote and that everyone in their family has registered, as well.
Urge teens and educators to attend an upcoming Run-A-Drive workshop, so they can hold a voter registration drive in their school before the deadline to register, which is 10 days before election day.

Donate to support our efforts. All funds obtained through this link between now and the special election will go to support our work in New York.
Don’t forget that everyone who registers to vote in the special election will also be old enough to vote in the general election in 2024, when this seat will be up for grabs again.
Please provide a donate button, preferably to a not-for-profit entity focused on registration and later, get-out-the-vote so I can help you from out of state. Also, please focus on the 19 to 26 year-olds - GenZs. They have the opportunity to save our democracy, especially as they probably 70 more years ahead of them. Nationally, there will be 30 million more GenZs than were able to vote in 2016 while there will be 10 million fewer over 65s. Now is the time for the equivalent of the "greatest generation" to take the reins by voting.
Thank you for your quick call to action on registering young people in CD3. While others are already focusing on the horse race, you are doing the work!
