The League of Women Voters in Marion, OH spent several days in late August registering young people at The Ohio State University and the Marion Technical Center. It was uplifting to find out as we asked those students passing our table that many already were registered; plus we were pleased to have registered a fair number of new voters during our time there.
We have work to do here in Ohio to get 18-year-olds registered to vote!
Sadly, as you noted, the Republican supermajority in the Ohio Statehouse passed a law in 2023 to suppress the youth vote with extreme ID requirements. Ohio now has the most restrictive voting laws in the country. It makes it extremely difficult to understand all the nuances and implications of the new voting restrictions, and that makes it challenging to explain voting rights to first-time voters.
